RSS Feeds not updating?

I've read all the other questions already and the answer sounds like it just doesn't work right in Yahoo! is that right? I have to delete my feeds, save that, and then put them back up again EVERY time. They've never updated.

Also, I tried to add a feed from gather.com and 360 gave me an error. I tried both the RSS, and the Yahoo specific feeds, and both gave errors...

RSS Feeds not updating?
I think what you have to do just to complain to Yahoo Customer Care. This is a very common problem and many users are suffering this.

Just inform them and wait, they will resolve it soon!

How to make my site RSS enable,so that users will get alerts...?

Hi all, first let me clarify what is rss in a very short. When site is enabled with RSS if any user subscribe/bookmark that page so that he gets the alerts on any kind of updations on that particular page or site. So how to make it. I have a site named www.bapubomma.com which is a small effort to put a famous artist online and all his works. There will be frequent updations in the site and i want to alert the user on this, so along my way to this, some one has given a hint about this RSS. Now i want to implement that immedietly so that the traffic to the site increases and so the money which will be helpful to that artist. In a short period i was able to put google adsense in my site.now my site is generating revenue ofcourse not much just about 5$ to 6$. Please help me i'll will be thankfull to you. Thanks in advance

How to make my site RSS enable,so that users will get alerts...?
RSS = Real Simple Syndication

If you haven't built your site yet, use a ready made website framework which already has RSS built in.

So, take Dotnetnuke as an example...

If your site is built using DNN as a framework, every module you deploy by default has an RSS feature you can turn on or off with a click.

Otherwise, you have to embed the code in your pages, specifying what RSS versions you wish to support.

RSS feeds?

Everytime I try to enter a RSS feed into my 360...I get "told" that the URL cannot be found. I am doing exactly as the directions are laid out on how to do it. When I "copy shortcut" nothing happens. In laymens terms can you tell me what it is to do?

RSS feeds?
There is a major issue with RSS feeds and Yahoo is aware of it.I have been told there is no time table for when it will be fixed. But its been an issue for quite a while now and hopefully they will do something about it soon.
Reply:Your welcome. Report It

Reply:The only thing I can say is the URL must end with xml. Check that once.

what file do you think it is in that folder that is loading?

its not index.html or any other extension that i tried

thnx

Rss link need help?
There may not be a real "directory" and "file" here to speak of. It is extremely common for web server software (like Apache HTTP Server) to allow URLs to map to virtual locations, and for websites to make use of that functionality. "http://www.opera.com/pressreleases/rss/... is very likely just an alias which tells the web server software to run some back-end CGI script whose output is what you see at that URL.

RSS on my 360?

On my Yahoo! 360 I want to add RSS feed from Yahoo Answers... but I tried a couple different things and i'm obviously doing something wrong. Help... step by step?

RSS on my 360?
%26lt; Copied and pasted from http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/360/pro... %26gt;

Follow these steps:

1. Go to your other blog or personal web site (or any site that provides them) and look for a little orange button like this (sorry, I can't get it to paste the example here. Wrong format. Try following link above for example) This shows that you can syndicate your content via RSS. Usually, this clickable button links directly to an RSS file. (The page looks like raw code, but don't let it scare you!)

2. To add the RSS URL to your Yahoo! 360° Feeds module, right-click on the orange XML button to "Copy Shortcut." Or click on the "XML" button and use "Ctrl-C" on your keyboard to copy the URL found in the address bar of your browser.

3. Use "Ctrl-V" to paste the URL into the field above. When you're done, click the "Save" button below.

Also... sometimes it can be a little glitchy. I do know from experience that if it at least holds in the space where you add it, even if it doesn't show on your page immediately... if you give it time. It will show up eventually. If it's not holding, or you are getting errors. Try again the next day as this problem usually sorts itself out rather quickly.

RSS feed: can anyone give examples, please ?

I'm embarrassed to ask this, because I'm fine with podcasts and downloads and almost everything digital. But although I've read what it is, the part of my brain which ought to understand is obviously missing.

It would be a real help, if you use RSS, if you could explain to me why and how you use it. In other words, tell me what you do.

I know, I'm pathetic. But lovable :)

RSS feed: can anyone give examples, please ?
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. RSS is a method of pushing news and related media to a user that subscribes to the RSS feed. The user utilizes what is known as a RSS aggregrator to consume the RSS feeds to present each feed's topics to the user. Typically, an RSS feed's entry will contain such things as a title/headline, post date, a brief synopsis of the article and a link to the full story. Sometimes (with an RSS 2.0 feed) images, audio and video are provided with the entry as well. Yahoo! wrote the RSS 2.0 Media specification that developers use to write their RSS feeds. RSS Feeds must comply with a specification to be properly consumed. The most popular feed specifications are RSS 1.0, RSS 2.0 and Atom.

RSS Feeds

You can find an available RSS feed on a site when you see the square orange RSS icon (although some sites have not updated and use an orange block that says XML). Clicking on the icon, you will be provided with either the ability to add the feed to your aggregator or copy and paste the URL to your aggregrator.

Here is what the icon looks like:

http://feedicons.com/

Browsers with RSS Support

RSS has largely been overlooked for the last couple of years but the lastest browser versions have now integrated an RSS aggregator into the browser itself so you don't have to have separate software to consume RSS feeds. These browsers support RSS:

Apple's Safari (Mac Only)

http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/saf...

Internet Explorer 7.0 (Windows Only)

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/defa...

Firefox 2.0 (Mac, Windows, Linux)

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

Flock Beta 0.7.8 (Mac, Windows)

http://flock.com/

RSS Feed Aggregators

If you don't have one of these browsers or do not want to use one, separate feed aggregators are:

NewsGator

http://www.newsgator.com/home.aspx

My Yahoo! RSS

http://my.yahoo.com/s/about/rss/index.ht...

FeedDemon

http://feeddemon.com/

This all may sound really complex, but once you start using RSS you'll find it amazing easy, productive, and informative.

Best of luck.

UPDATE:

I use RSS for news, blogs, and even product support. I like to keep up-to-date with world news and I also like tech gear. But I don't have the time to browse all the news and gear sites everyday. Instead, I get the articles sent to me and if it sounds interesting, I'll go and read the entire article. I also save some of the feeds in my reader so I can reference in the future. Digg is a good example as you can subscribe to any category or subcategory of topics so you only get the feeds that important to you.

I also use RSS for blogs. By doing this, I can receive feeds when a new post is added without having to visit the site periodically to check for new posts.

I also receive RSS feeds on product support. Some of the vendors that I use will publish updates, product announcements, and bug reports so I know right away by way of RSS.

Lastly, I also receive RSS feeds on sites with tutorials. This is a big help for me at work. It's nice to review new tutorials descriptions and if its something that I would like to learn, then I follow the link to the tutorial.

The great thing about RSS is that I often read over feeds and then a couple of weeks later, something comes up and I remember that I saw something related to the subject in my RSS. Then, I just search the feeds to find the topic and it's a great, big help.
Reply:really simple syndicate, but I tell you it is not simple at all I found that out my self and was introduce to the website below

RSS business ideas ...?

RSS business ideas ...?
I think there is a fair amount of potential in feeding RSS to mobile devices, TV, fridges etc. Perhaps there is money to be made from embedding adverts in the feed? What angle are you approaching this from?

Update:

IM is important and mature, and email is undoubtedly more so. RSS may be immune from spam, and (we'll assume) from virii, but does this make it important enough to be the next big thing in communications technology? With all due respect, don't forget it's just a simple XML doctype for publishing summaries of content. I believe that semantic web technologies will play a important role in e-commerce, but RSS is "baby steps" compared to the prospect of a fully machine-readable web.

Prove me wrong. People who do clever things with simple technologies are often the greatest pioneers.

I doubt PSP has RSS... you usually need a program, or a browser plug-in for that.

Check around on google, or your User's Manual if RSS is a possibility.

I know why RSS is good for the consumer, but how can it be good for the web designer?

I know why RSS is good for the consumer, but how can it be good for the web designer and site owner? Doesn't it end up keeping people away from your website since they simply subscribe to your data and don't have any reason to visit?

Yes it's good that people are reading your data (blogs, etc.) but your hits go down and ad revenue dwindles if people stop coming.

Isn't that what a commecial site owner would be thinking about RSS?

I know why RSS is good for the consumer, but how can it be good for the web designer?
Yes, and some sites provide "partial" feeds via RSS, requiring the user to go to the site before being able to read all the data.

The argument for full feeds more or less runs like this: You need to entice users to your site. By providing a full feed you are giving your users what they want, and they will be more inclined to look upon you favorably. So rather than directly forcing eyeballs to your site, you are working on the reputation of your site for quality data, and hoping the users will pass along your site to others through bloglines or deli.cio.us, and getting new eyeballs indirectly.

What is the RSS feed for Flickr photos with two tags?

I am trying to get/make an rss feed for public flickr photos with TWO tags. Specifically, I want "valentine" and "cupcakes", so all the images need to have both tags. I have found lots of resources on how to do one tag (cupcakes):

http://api.flickr.com/services/feeds/pho...

but not two. I don't know how to do much coding, for example this looks too complicated:

http://justagwailo.com/2005/09/20/multip...

Can someone please find me the formula?

What is the RSS feed for Flickr photos with two tags?
In its RSS feeds, Flickr doesn't let you get photos tagged with all tags you tell it in an RSS feed, so I whipped up a script that, if you have your own server, creates RSS feeds of the tags you specify. If you called it 'multitags.php', and you put it on your site, say example.com, the URL would look something like http://www.example.com/multitags.php?tag... That would get you an RSS feed (in a format very similar to the format of the RSS feeds that Flickr outputs) of photos that are tagged with both 'vancouver' and 'seawall'.

If you used a comma instead of a plus, it looks for photos tagged with either of the tags, so http://www.example.com/multitags.php?tag... would get you photos tagged with 'vancouver' mixed in with the photos tagged with 'seawall'. There is a way to get RSS feeds of tags this way, but why figure that out. How to do it is in a forum somewhere, but I couldn't remember where, so I just coded that into the script.

You'll need two things to use the script: the excellent phpFlickr library (support for uploading coming, nice!) and a Flickr API key, which you can get at http://www.flickr.com/services/api/. You'll need to change the three variables at the top of the script, which follows, accordingly.

A note about the code: the first little bit about the XML declaration making up multiple lines is a workaround for the code dispaly. And yes, there are a lot of print statements. It makes it easier for me to debug.

It's probably best to keep the URL secret, so that the only person hitting the script is you. The RSS feeds work for me in NetNewsWire, but please do submit bug reports in the comments.
Reply:I don't consider this the best answer to my question, because it is not even a good one. Report It

You have to activate that option and it can only be used on "Public" blogs. Your blog is not a Public blog, so that option is not available.

If you want to change this, click on "My Blog". Click on "Edit Blog Settings." Set "Who can see your blog" to Public. Then, you can check the Publish Site Feed option and click the SAVE button.

RSS feed. How do I add it to my site?

I don't understand the use of RSS feed. Is it only to blog with?

RSS feed. How do I add it to my site?
Feeds/RSS are used if you want to show content from other websites on your 360 page. It updates to show new content from blogs, news websites, your favorite websites, etc. "If you have another blog on Live Journal, Typepad, Xanga, or Wordpress, you can create an RSS feed of that blog and add it to Yahoo! 360°."

You are allowed 3 feeds.

If you're on a site, you can check to see if the site has feeds. The link to view a website's "RSS"/feed is usually on the side panel or at the very bottom of most websites.

Here some examples of sites with feeds:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/help/3223484....

http://news.yahoo.com/rss

http://www.nytimes.com/services/xml/rss/

http://www.livejournal.com/syn/list.bml

For example:

On the BBC site, it says "Choose a feed." You click the echoing, orange icon or the and you'll be take to that particular feed's page. Then, you can copy the URL of the feed from your address bar and paste it into the boxes on your 360 page.

*Note: Some sites work better with Y! 360 than others. I.E. BBC feeds works great with 360, but a lesser known website might not work as well.
Reply:RSS feeds give you daily updates of news, sports, jokes or whatever you subscribe to. The feeds will show up on your 360 page and should update daily. It's best if you follow Yahoo's instructions on how to search for and install feeds.

BUT; Right now the feeds are kinda messed up and not working right, so if you get an error message, just ignore it and the feeds should start working in a few days.

Login to your 360, click on “My Page” in the top navigation bar. In the middle of your page, you will see Add Feeds. Click on it and from there you can also search for feeds to add.
Reply:Go to edit my Feeds. And then you post a rss but it has to be a URL address. Copy the URL address you want to add to your Feed and then paste it in one of the spaces. You only get 3 spaces.. After you paste the Feed go to save. You may be a error and then go back to save and click again. Then it may take awhile to show up. Mine took a week. But some say a couple of days. If it does not show up soon just go back to it and click save again. But all Feeds have to have a URL

Your question doesn't make much sense, but I'll try to help.

If what you mean is, you needed a way to display an RSS feed on your Web site, and you found a PHP page to do it, then no, the free Web hosting you noted won't work.

Try using http://www.addyour.net instead.

As an alternative, you can read RSS feeds with JavaScript and use that to display the results on a regular HTML page. You won't need to change hosts then.

How to add RSS feed to my website?
Feedburner.com is a good option too.
Reply:RSS is a family of web feed formats, specified in XML and used for Web syndication. RSS is used by (among other things) news websites, weblogs and podcasting. The abbreviation is variously used to refer to the following standards:

* Really Simple Syndication (RSS 2.0)

* Rich Site Summary (RSS 0.91, RSS 1.0)

* RDF Site Summary (RSS 0.9 and 1.0)

Web feeds provide web content or summaries of web content together with links to the full versions of the content, and other metadata. RSS, in particular, delivers this information as an XML file called an RSS feed, webfeed, RSS stream, or RSS channel. In addition to facilitating syndication, web feeds allow a website's frequent readers to track updates on the site using an aggregator.

Usage

Web feeds are widely used by the weblog community to share the latest entries' headlines or their full text, and even attach multimedia files. (See podcasting, vodcasting, broadcasting, screencasting, Vloging, and MP3 blogs.) Since mid-2000, use of RSS has spread to many of the major news organizations, including Reuters, CNN, PR Newswire, Business Wire, and the BBC. These providers allow other websites to incorporate their "syndicated" headline or headline-and-short-summary feeds under various usage agreements. RSS is now used for many purposes, including marketing, bug-reports, or any other activity involving periodic updates or publications. Many corporations are turning to RSS for delivery of their news, replacing email and fax distribution.

If you click on the button you can subscribe to the feed in various ways, including by dragging the URL of the RSS feed into your news reader or by cutting and pasting the same URL into a new feed in your news reader.

Some browsers, including Firefox, Opera and Safari, have functionality which automatically picks up RSS feeds for you. For more details on these, please check their websites.

For many RSS enabled browsers, when you go to our home page you will see an orange icon at the bottom right of the browser window. Clicking on this icon brings up a box with the words 'Subscribe to Learning English RSS'. If you select this then a new bookmark will be created on your toolbar (or wherever you specify.) This bookmark will have links to all of the latest articles, activities, quizzes etc. Each time you open the browser or refresh the live bookmark it will automatically update with the latest links

RSS feeds from Blogger to Yahoo 360 posting out of order?

Blogger, by default, exposes the RSS atom file for your blog. Therefore, if your blog URL is:

In order to get a better understanding of how RSS works download an RSS reader or use a web aggregator and subscribe to an RSS feed (they are usually indicated by a small orange icon).
Reply:They also offer web sites the option of importing interesting content from other sites without having to create it themselves. You can import articles using RSS from other sites to make your own site more interesting. A good example of this is http://www.littlegreenbabies.co.uk its an ecommerce shop that uses RSS feeds to bring in relative content for its customers
Reply:You can syndicate content from multiple sites into one reader. This means that you can read all of the new articles from your favorite sites, as they are published, in one central location.

The easiest feed reader that I have found is google reader:

http://www.google.com/reader/

Sign up for it, go to pages that have an RSS feed and click the rss button. If you are logged into your google account you will get the option to add it to your google reader in the drop down.

You can also subscribe using live bookmarks with Firefox. The feed will go right on your browser bar and you can click the icon next to it to view the new articles.

The benefit is that it saves you a lot of time and you don't have to check a site for updates.

What is an RSS feed and why would you want it over regular web stuff?

As you can tell, I am not computer literate. What I am asking is this, I was a member of Photojo, and decided to unsubscribe. It said ok, but do you want to RSS instead? I said no. cuz I don't know if that is a good or bad thing. So what is the difference between getting email from Photojo, or RSS stuff?

What is an RSS feed and why would you want it over regular web stuff?
well emailing is a bit annoying as it involves the big bunch of information sent in to the valuable space we have for our friends which is actually of very little use but when u RSS a website it continously informs u of changes that happen to the website without going into the website....and there is no emails sent ...

Instead of just another dry (though informative) WikiPedia-style answer, let me try a different approach...

The best way to see what all the excitement is about is to try one of the better RSS readers and see the potential. My two favorites are AlertBear and FeedReader

http://www.alertbear.com/

http://www.feedreader.com/

Here are just a few uses that I've found handy...

1) I have a feed from Traffic.com that automatically tells me if there have been any delays from accidents or construction on my morning commute.

2) I have a feed from NetFlix that lets me know about new DVD releases in categories I like.

3) I have a feed for my local CraigsList letting me know about new job postings related to PHP, MySQL, Flash, and a few others.

4) I use it to keep an eye on web-based discussion forums that support feeds, so that I can answer questions promptly when I know the answer. Unfortunately this does not yet include Yahoo Answers, because their RSS support for question search results is completely inadequate (so far).
Reply:It is the sindication of feeds. Now RSS 2.0 stands for Really Simple Syndication.

It is a web feed format which is standardized for the feed readers to read the syntax and display the crisp Title of the feed and then the contents called as teaser text and then a link which will make the readers to get back to the original site.

RSS format complies with XML format.

The web browser IE7.0 has a built in RSS reader and hence when you clik on any RSS feeds it automatically parses the XML and displays the Title, content and link in the browser window.

These feeds are used for web sites with dynamically changing contents like the news or share market listing etc.

The readers are capable of aggregating feeds from different RSS channels and yet display in a single window which makes one subscribe to news from different web sites and yet see all the world news at a glance.

In case if you prefer to give a RSS feed, you got to prepare either static or a dynamic contents which complies to the XML , RSS feed format which can be obtained from

Definitions of RSS Feed:

RSS is a form of eXtensible Markup Language or XML. Viewing an RSS feed in a web browser generally produces code that is not easy for website visitors to decipher. As a result, webmasters use tools to display the content contained in an RSS feed.

RSS is a family of XML file formats for web syndication used by news websites and weblogs. They are used to provide items containing short descriptions of web content together with a link to the full version of the content. This information is delivered as an XML file called RSS feed, webfeed, RSS stream, or RSS channel.
Reply:In Yahoo News you can enter a search for "snowboarding" to get an RSS feed for articles about snowboarding.

Then you can display titles and links for the articles in Y!360 or MySpace.

This link is an RSS feed for news about snowboarding.

http://news.search.yahoo.com/news/rss;_y...

Try searching for an "RSS Directory" in the search engine.

YouTube has videos explaining RSS.

You can display and provide links for your Y!A questions, your starred questions, and the news that interests you on your Y!360 and MySpace pages with an RSS feed.

http://myspace.com/22449233

http://rssonmyspace.com

The feed for my questions in MySpace updates faster than the one in my Y!360.

Find your list of questions.

To the right of your most recent question you will see the RSS link.

Click on it with the right button then left click on copy shortcut (URL).

Or you can double click the RSS link and then copy the URL from your address bar.

In your Y!360 click "My Page."

http://360.yahoo.com/

Click "Add a Feed (via RSS)" or click "Edit Feeds."

Right click on one of the three boxes then left click on paste (the short cut - URL).

Then save.

You can also display information from:

Yahoo! News (for specific subjects like your state, country, or corporation)

http://news.yahoo.com/rss

MSN News

BBC News

MySpace Blogs

Craigslist, Digg, Netflix, YouTube, and many periodicals.
Reply:Yes. Many searches can now be in RSS feeds, these type of searches are usually called "Ego Feeds" because people often use them to watch for mentions of their names, company names or product names.

Here is how to set it up for news on Google (see the sources for additional ways):

Search Google News http://news.google.com for "snowboard", when viewing the results note the word RSS on the right side of the screen.

Click the RSS word and you will get this link - http://news.google.com/news?hl=en%26amp;ned=us...

Paste this link into an RSS reader, now each time a story about snowboard appears in Google News you will receive notification in your RSS reader.

Let me know if you need advice on RSS readers.

As a side note RSS can be used for much more than just Ego Feeds, this is simply one use.

RSS, SEO and link building?

Do RSS feed help build links for your websites? How do they do it?

RSS, SEO and link building?
Actually, it can provide direct help because some web sites will pull RSS content into their pages, and if they pull your feed, you've got a link from their site.

Also, at the Search Engine Strategies conference in San Jose last year, Jon Glick -- a former Yahoo search manager -- explained that Yahoo will crawl sites that offer RSS more often, because there's an assumption the site offers fresh content.

I'll post the link to a recap of Jon's presentation in the "source" field below.

RSS feeds don't really help your search engine rank in terms of links back to your site to my knowledge. They do help people access your site's content using RSS feed readers and the like. If you post a ton of good content on your site and place an RSS feed on your site, hopefully people will link to you from their sites for having great content they can add to their feed readers. In a round about way they can help SEO, but not directly. Hope this helps.

Create an RSS feed/file and display it on my website for free.?

I would like to create an rss feed/file to display on my website. I am also looking for some sort of tool or applet to attractively display the rss on my website for news and announcements. I would like to manage these myself if possible. Any suggestions?

Create an RSS feed/file and display it on my website for free.?
The easiest way to create an RSS feed is to use software. The software I would recommend is FeedForAll (there is a Windows and a Mac version). There is a built-in wizard that will walk you through the process of creating a feed.

You can download an evaluation version from http://www.feedforall.com

If you prefer to create the feed by hand this website details how to hand code the RSS feed http://www.make-rss-feeds.com

It sounds like you want to display an RSS feed within your HTML website. The easiest/best way to do this is to use RSS2HTML a free PHP script. This means that you can retain the complete control of the HTML layout (using templates) and make it match your existing design. Additionally using PHP rather than JavaScript will mean that search engine spiders can "spider" the contents of the RSS feeds.

Additional details and a free rss2html download is available at: http://www.feedforall.com/more-php.htm

Additional information and other options for displaying RSS feeds can be found at: http://www.rss-specifications.com/displa...

Goodluck!
Reply:n addition to making your RSS feed available to your visitors for use with their RSS Feed Reader, as a webmaster you may also want to make the same feed available on your website for viewing with a regular web browser.

There are several ways to do this, some have advantages or disadvantages compared to others. The best solution is one where the webpage is automatically updated on-the-fly, is easily spidered by search engine robots, and easy to implement.

To attain this optimal solution, the developers of FeedForAll have created a free RSS to HTML PHP script. When used, this script will allow you to create webpages that will always display the most current information from your RSS feed, and because the resulting page is pure HTML, it will be in a format friendly to search engine robots.

Purpose: Display an RSS feed's contents on a webpage Advantages: Always displays the most current information from your RSS feed Search engine spider and robot friendly Will run on any webserver that supports PHP Easy to implement Requirements: Website RSS 2.0, .93, .92, .91, or .90 feed

Implementation: There are three ways the RSS to HTML PHP script can be implemented on your website.

1.) Put a free copy of the rss2html.php script on your webserver and call it by passing the URLs of your feed and webpage template files.

2.) Put a free copy of the rss2html.php script on your webserver and edit its feed and template variables

3.) Run the rss2html.php script from a server, passing it the URLs of your feed and webpage template files free of charge.

4.) Pass your feed to the RSS2HTML server which will display the feed in an html format free of charge.

http://www.feedforall.com/more-php.htm
Reply:RSS2HTML is your best bet, very easy to use. I've been using it for a while, just be sure that your host has cURL open (installed?) otherwise you will get occasional errors in reading the feed.
Reply:You can get all rss feeds and buttons etc from Feedburner - free and reliable

What is RSS( technology) , advantage and disadvantage, funtion or system of RSS?

RSS is technology

What is RSS( technology) , advantage and disadvantage, funtion or system of RSS?
RSS is a web feed format. Whats advantage or disadvantage? I can't think of any disadvantage, unless you would want to compare with some other feed formats. Feed readers or aggregators can check a list of feeds on behalf of a user and display any updated articles that they find. So you can have a list of feeds on your reader and check if there is anything new on the site without actually visiting the site.

http://www.gfour.net
Reply:RSS means Really Simple Syndicate, is the technology that make you up-to-date.

You can subscribe to the feed in many ways, in your browser, in a program, or in a web-based solution, such as protopage.com. The feed will update itself automatically.
Reply:It's a method for publishers to provide content via a subscription model using a feed reader. The content could be just a headline, summary, full text story or podcast. It varies based on the publisher.

The publishers can be people like webmasters, bloggers, reports and so on. The content is contained in a machine readable file that the feed reader uses to format and present the data to you. Similar to what an email application does when it grabs your email.

To get the feed, a user needs to "subscribe". This is a way of telling your feed reader you want to go get this web feed.

The main benefit is you don't need to go out to a website to see what content is new. Your feed reader determines this by getting the feed and determining what's new. It reduces the amount of time it takes you to view sites. Instead of going to 20 sites daily, you can aggregate all the new content in one place and review it. If something looks interesting, you can click the title to go to the original source.

The disadvantage is it may not be as interactive experience as some users like. For example, if the content is from a blog that allows comments, you may not be able to enter them using your feed reader.
Reply:RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary. Syndicating means republishing an article that comes from another source such as a website.

An RSS is a means of publicizing updates about websites. It may or may not include a summary and photos of the latest posting. But those that provide summaries (thus Rich Site Summary) allow users to skim through the article so that they could decide later on if they want to access the website source. The RSS feed usually contains the title of the update originating from the website. It is also usually the link to the website source.

What are the benefits of RSS?

RSS gives benefits to both readers (users) and web publishers.

1.It gives you the latest updates.

Whether it is about the weather, new music, software upgrade, local news, or a new posting from a rarely-updates site learn about the latest as soon as it comes out.

2.It saves on surfing time.

Since an RSS feed provides a summary of the related article, it saves the user’s time by helping s/he decide on which items to prioritize when reading or browsing the net.

3.It gives the power of subscription to the user.

Users are given a free-hand on which websites to subscribe in their RSS aggregators which they can change at any time they decide differently.

4.It lessens the clutter in your inbox.

Although your email address will be required to enjoy the services of online RSS aggregators, RSS does not use your email address to send the updates.

5.It is spam free.

Unlike email subscriptions, RSS does not make use of your email address to send updates thus your privacy is kept safe from spam mails.

6.Unsubscribing is hassle-free.

Unlike email subscriptions where the user is asked questions on why s/he is unsubscribing and then the user would be asked to confirm unsubscribing, all you have to do is to delete the RSS feed from your aggregator.

7.It can be used as an advertising or marketing tool.

Users who subscribe or syndicate product websites receive the latest news on products and services without the website sending spam mail. This is advantageous to both the web user and the website owner since advertising becomes targeted; those who are actually interested in their products are kept posted.

What are the drawbacks of RSS?

The disadvantages of RSS use are brought about by its being a new technology and some user-preference concerns.

1.Some users prefer receiving email updates over an RSS feed.

2.Graphics and photos do not appear in all RSS feeds.

For conciseness and ease of publication, RSS feeds do not display the photos from the original site in announcing the update except for some web-based aggregators

3.The identity of the source website can be confusing.

Since RSS feeds do not display the actual URL or name of the website, it can sometimes get confusing on what feed a user is actually reading.

4.Publishers cannot determine how many users are subscribed to their feed and the frequency of their visits. Moreover, they would not know the reasons why users unsubscribe which could be important in improving their advertising.

5.RSS feeds create higher traffic and demands on the server.

Most readers still prefer the whole update over a brief summary of the entry, thus they still access the site.

6.Since it is a new technology, many sites still do not support RSS.

How do I start using RSS?

There are two things needed: an RSS feed and an RSS aggregator or reader. The RSS feed comes from an RSS-supported website. There are also websites that provide a list of RSS feeds of different websites. An RSS aggregator is used to read the RSS feed from the source website. It scans and collects data on latest RSS feeds from the worldwide web.

An aggregator comes in two forms: a downloadable program also known as desktop aggregator and an online or web-based aggregator. Downloadable aggregators may require payment before they can be acquired, while internet-based aggregators are usually free of charge. All you need to do is to register an account then you are ready to use their services. Both versions allow you to customize or choose which RSS feeds to enter. Paid aggregators are usually chosen by more experienced users and they usually allow more freedom in customizing feeds.

1.Choose an RSS aggregator to use. For beginners, web-based aggregators are recommended since they are usually user-friendly

2.Scan the homepage of your target website for the RSS or XML button. It contains the RSS code you need to enter in the aggregator. Copy this code. Syndic8 provides a directory of websites that support RSS.

3.Paste the code (which contains the URL of the website) in your aggregator. There is a space provided for pasting the code.

After you have done these three easy steps, you can start reading the RSS feeds coming from the website. New postings appear as they are published real time at the source website.

RSS and Internet Marketing

The original idea of RSS came from Netscape, where their intention is to provide a means for users to customize their personal homepage to contain links to websites that interest them, similar to bookmarking websites.

The application of RSS to internet marketing was an unforeseen development to RSS technology developers. Since users are given the freedom to add RSS feeds to their aggregators, those who are interested in particular products and services available in the internet can now be notified real time. Marketing becomes more specific to interested people and not a hit-and-miss operation.

Those who intend to use RSS for marketing their products and services should consider linking up with email account providers, (e.g. Yahoo, MSN, Google mail); networking websites (e.g. Friendster, Multiply, My Space, Hi5); websites of newspapers and television network websites (e.g. New York Times, CNN) for medium to big-scale companies. Small-time industries can also look into networking websites as well as personal blog websites (e.g. Blogspot) and websites of clubs and organizations that would probably make use of their products or services e.g. a fishing supplies store can look for the website of their local fishing club for possible RSS marketing.

Clearly, RSS is an innovation in information management in the worldwide web as well as online marketing. We can expect better RSS technology in the not-so-distant future as its popularity increases among users and website owners alike.

Reply:You have three basic options.

(1) Have something running that downloads the RSS, generates some HTML from it, then stores it on the server. You end up with a static page.

(2) Have something running on the server that generates HTML on demand. This is a dynamic page, so doesn't suit your needs.

(3) Use something like http://pipes.yahoo.com/ to convert the RSS feed to JSON, then process that with client side JavaScript. There is nothing dynamic on the server, but there is client side code.

Google Reader will not help.

How to receive rss feeds older than subscription date ?

Hi!

First I am just a newbie with rss technology but good on pc.

I am using a desktop rss reader software called Feedreader to read my subscribed feeds even I am offline (I like this).

Sometimes I find excellent blog sites about my interests and add them to my faves easily. Once I have added a blog site my reader (as others do) only receives recent entries from the resource site.

If possible I wish to be able to choose or receive older feeds (for archieving and easy browsing purposes) into my reader from these blog sites not only recent ones.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

How to receive rss feeds older than subscription date ?
It isn't possible. the data simply isn't there. The point of RSS feeds (at least as far as most site authors are concerned) is to let people know when there is updated content, not to let them view the entire site without visiting it. Consequently, the feeds only include recent entries.
Reply:You'd have to talk to that sites Administrator. RSS feeds are done using XML that has the information. If they constantly replace their XML documents without archiving them, then even they can't give you the information.

Rss feeds for my web site?

i have a web site and want to add rss sports news on my site, is there a trick to doing this?

how do i add this inside an iframe or block

Rss feeds for my web site?
Don't do it with html, you need to step up to asp or the like. ASP means Active Server Page. when the server receives a request it builds a page and sends it. Since your rss feed is dynamic content you should not use a static page for displaying it.
Reply:See if one of these RSS widgets would help.

http://members.freewebs.com/MembersB/Wid...

They let you set up a feed inside a widget you can put on your webpage.
Reply:It sounds like you want to display an RSS feed within your HTML website.

RSS feed on IE7?

RSS feeds do not automatically refresh, although I have them all set for 15 mins to 60 mins, depending on site. I rt click on them, properties then set them. The only way I have been able to get them to refresh is by manually clicking refresh button. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

RSS feed on IE7?
That's right. The news source is updated every so often you have it set so it will reset every time the web page is reopened. Hit the F5 button on your keyboard to refresh the page. It's a lot faster and easier than clicking the refresh button with your mouse. Try it, you'll like it! :-))

Does anyone know of a FREE program i can use to create RSS feeds?

RSS feeds?
try this

http://www.cosmicscripts.com/demos/rss.s...
Reply:It depends on what you plan on creating them from. If you want to create one for you blog, Feedburner is a popular choice.
Reply:Havent' tried them as I use FeedforAll. But the folks below may be a solution for you.
Reply:You can use any program that can edit xml files since an RSS feed is just and XML file. Then you can go to any RSS feed on your browser and save it, and then you can look at it and learn on your own

Good examples of RSS feeds?

I'm designing a site for which the client wants RSS feeds, can you give me links to cool real (not tutorials) examples of how a well designed with RSS or other kind of feeds looks like?

Right now I'm primarily looking for ideas for the layout, since I won't be doing the code I'm not so interested in knowing exactly how it's done. But if someone wants to put links to how feeds are done in addition to cool design examples, I'll appreciatte it. Remember cool and very practical examples. Thanks so much.

Good examples of RSS feeds?
Not sure if you just want to see how websites break out their feeds or what kind of content can be contained in an RSS feed. This will give you an idea, in order to see the feed contents you will need to add them to an RSS reader otherwise you will just see XML

MicroISV feeds -

Photo Feeds -

If you want more info on RSS see the websites listed in the source.
Reply:RSS feeds are nothing more than simple xml files containing headlines of interest (sports, news, new message alerts, etc..)

To incorporate them into a site use a dynamic scripting language like perl or php. There are many tutorials for such online and it takes about 5 mins to setup.

Should I use RSS or Atom or both as feeds to my site?

We just released our site www.weareonlyhuman.com and have implemented some feeds into the site. At the moment we are testing it out and have both atom and rss. Should I have both on the site or choose one over the other? Most of my favorite sites just use RSS and I'm not too happy with having two feeds to confuse people with. What's your thoughts?

Should I use RSS or Atom or both as feeds to my site?
If you can provide both, you should. RSS is more widely used, however.
Reply:if you give them classic rss, which rss will you give them? RSS was a mess until atom came along! I hope you validate your feeds! Anything rss (0.9, 1.0 or 2.0) can do Atom can do better!

Have you ever found an RSS reader that doesn't do ATOM?

but since you want a simple answer... keep them both, but give better screenspace to the ATOM feed!

Rss feed question?

when building a webpage, can you add a rss feed(just receiving info) by simply adding a code to your html or do you have to have a program like a reader to intigrate it? thanks

Rss feed question?
Hi! RSS is one of my favorite topics!

An RSS page is like html, but all the tags are different. People don't usually make rss feeds by hand, they use special programs that read the content of the site and just show what is current.

so the answer is YES, you need a special program to make it.. but not a reader, that's how your friends/users will read it.

since you know HTML, look at this page and others, and notice how they do the rss links, and the special code in the %26lt;head%26gt; called the %26lt;meta%26gt; tag to show exactly where the rss is for this page!

welcome back to creating web pages!
Reply:Just you can add the rss link in you webpage in html.

For example your feed is called rssfeed.xml

then you can create a link %26lt;a href="rssfeed.xml"%26gt;Rss Feed%26lt;/a%26gt;

If you want the bot to read your rss feed automatically you can include it in the %26lt;meta tag%26gt; of your html.
Reply:Once you create your RSS feed you can use a free tool from Feed for All that will give you the lines for autodiscovery you can add to your web page.

This makes is easier for people to subscribe to your feed.

How To Include RSS Feed in My Page?
You can use RSS2HTML it is a free PHP script that displays RSS feeds as HTML on websites. You can customize the layout to match your websites current look.

Details are here: http://www.feedforall.com/free-php-scrip...

Best of luck!
Reply:Try the RSS Pal. It is really easy.

Yahoo Media-RSS feed?

does anyone know how long Yahoo crawlers take to index a website based on Media-RSS?? I had submitted my M-RSS 2 weeks back and still it has not been indexed!

Yahoo Media-RSS feed?
RSS feeds are updated on a schedule, so it may take a few hours before your feeds appear on Yahoo! 360.

But I think 2 weeks are enough for RSS feeds to be updated, so I think you have to go through a double check and make sure that you've done everything right.

What is RSS? Plz Explain with all necessary details?

I want to know all about RSS Feeds. How can i add RSS Feeds of My site On My Yahoo 360

What is RSS? Plz Explain with all necessary details?
RSS is a family of XML file formats for Web syndication used by (among other things) news websites and weblogs. The abbreviation is used to refer to the following standards:

* Rich Site Summary (RSS 0.91)

* RDF Site Summary (RSS 0.9 and 1.0)

* Really Simple Syndication (RSS 2.0.0)

The technology of RSS allows Internet users to subscribe to websites that have provided RSS feeds; these are typically sites that change or add content regularly. To use this technology, site owners create or obtain specialized software (such as a content management system) which, in the machine-readable XML format, presents new articles in a list, giving a line or two of each article and a link to the full article or post. Unlike subscriptions to many printed newspapers and magazines, most RSS subscriptions are free.

The RSS formats provide web content or summaries of web content together with links to the full versions of the content, and other meta-data. This information is delivered as an XML file called an RSS feed, webfeed, RSS stream, or RSS channel. In addition to facilitating syndication, RSS allows a website's frequent readers to track updates on the site using an aggregator.

Reply:RSS is a format for syndicating news and the content of news-like sites, including major news sites like Wired, news-oriented community sites like Slashdot, and personal weblogs. But it's not just for news. Pretty much anything that can be broken down into discrete items can be syndicated via RSS: the "recent changes" page of a wiki, a changelog of CVS checkins, even the revision history of a book. Once information about each item is in RSS format, an RSS-aware program can check the feed for changes and react to the changes in an appropriate way.

RSS-aware programs called news aggregators are popular in the weblogging community. Many weblogs make content available in RSS. A news aggregator can help you keep up with all your favorite weblogs by checking their RSS feeds and displaying new items from each of them.

A brief history

But coders beware. The name "RSS" is an umbrella term for a format that spans several different versions of at least two different (but parallel) formats. The original RSS, version 0.90, was designed by Netscape as a format for building portals of headlines to mainstream news sites. It was deemed overly complex for its goals; a simpler version, 0.91, was proposed and subsequently dropped when Netscape lost interest in the portal-making business. But 0.91 was picked up by another vendor, UserLand Software, which intended to use it as the basis of its weblogging products and other web-based writing software.

In the meantime, a third, non-commercial group split off and designed a new format based on what they perceived as the original guiding principles of RSS 0.90 (before it got simplified into 0.91). This format, which is based on RDF, is called RSS 1.0. But UserLand was not involved in designing this new format, and, as an advocate of simplifying 0.90, it was not happy when RSS 1.0 was announced. Instead of accepting RSS 1.0, UserLand continued to evolve the 0.9x branch, through versions 0.92, 0.93, 0.94, and finally 2.0.
